Get a Job

After a week of being here on my own, I am beginning to feel antsy. The apartment is coming together nicely- if I could overcome my fear of assembling furniture and just put my damn desk together. I've shopped 'til I've dropped. I've made lists. I've gotten lost around town searching for stores. I have a broom now, so let the cleaning begin.

But now I need a job.

I've been applying. Really, I have. I had that one interview and have another set up for Wednesday. But none of them excite me. I wonder if the thought of work will ever excite me after being so incredibly drained at my last job? Can this fatigue overshadow any enthusiasm I might have for a new line of work? All I can do is forge ahead, damn my resistance. Apply, apply. Call, call. Wait.

Last night I had my first "dinner party" even though it wasn't altogether a "party." But the three, make that four, people who are behind my number one reason to move all came over to toast my new digs. That's Hillz, Double B (with his eyes closed and looking quite short in that chair) and the very pregnant Dokey (the fourth being my baby nephew in her belly).

My nephew really likes ice cream and fruit. Good boy! But he didn't like the Pirates of the Caribbean movie, sadly. Too much swashbuckling. There goes my hope of him becoming a pirate.

The great thing about being closer to family, outside of the obvious benefits like being close to people you love, you can also ask them to do stuff for you without a whole lot of guilt (well, I guess that depends on the family, huh?). At this point my brother-in-law might be cursing the fact that he is a master at art installation and handy things like putting together furniture and hanging curtain rods. Thanks to him I have things on my walls which makes this apartment feel more like "home" day by day. Thanks Double B.

Now off to apply so more. (Do not turn on Dawson's Creek, Sizz. Seriously, don't touch that remote. Otherwise you know you won't get anything done for hours.)

Yay! I'm so glad it's beginning to feel like home! The job will come with time. Allow yourself some regrouping time to figure out what you really want from a job. Oh, and ask Sandra about her first job when she moved out to SF. It will make you feel better :)

If that cranberry bowl is William's Sonoma I have the same set.

Stuff on the walls always makes things feel like home, and good on awesome brother-in-laws. They totally rock.

I have to tell you that I can relate to the benefit of having handymen nearby. I had them in Hawaii, but lost them here...and now I have four things that still have to be mounted on my walls still laying on the floor:(

As for the job, it took me 2 1/2 months to find what I liked. I don't know how long you can wait it out, but my best advice is to trust your gut. If something doesn't feel right, then you probably won't be happy with the job in the long-run.

Your nephew and I have similar taste in movies:)

I've lived in my apartment for 6 months and I still don't have art installed! How does your B-I-L feel about a trip to Pennsyvania?! I'm glad to hear that you are settling and things are starting to get rolling for you - I'm sure your dream job will pop up soon!

Good luck on the job searching front today! Also, looks like a great dinner party, although I think anything with ice cream and fruit is great. Mmmmm...

Why not temp for awhile that way you can see what is out there and not commit to something till you are "really sure" that is what you want to do..... I temped for 1 year and met so many cool people when I first moved to Lincoln NE back in 1993.

it took me around five months to find the "right" job when i moved to cali...don't worry, it will all come together.

just promise me you won't accept a mediocre job JUST because you feel you NEED a job right away. you'll only hate it, end up leaving and guess what? back to square one you go...

i can't wait to read more about your adventures in seattle. :)

I'm betting you'll find a job that's just right soon enough. Relax a little, it sounds like you planned this well enough to do that.

And don't turn on TNT during the daytime. You'll never leave the house.

Look forward to hearing about all your new adventures!

You'll get excited for a new job at approximately the same time you completely panic about not having one.

I put a desk together once. It took me a few hours.

Good luck on finding a job, Sizz.

I won't say anything about your Dawson's Creek, if you don't say anything about my General Hospital :)
