Autobiography in Five Short Chapters

I.
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost...I am helpless
It takes forever to find a way out.

II.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in the same place.
I still takes a long time to get out.

III.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there...
I still fall in...it's a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
I get out immediately.

IV.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

V.
I walk down another street.

-Portia Nelson

My mother sent this to me in the mail this week. It was read at my college graduation ceremony and I sent her a copy of it in postcard form because she had liked it so much. She kept it all these years and returned it to me. It really couldn't be more appropriate or timely. (Thanks Mom. You're the greatest.) I thought I'd share it with y'all. Maybe it will speak to you too?

It absolutely speaks to me. I think I'm still in the habit place. I know I'm there, I'm just struggling to break the habit so that next time I can walk around the hole or just find another street altogether.

Thank you for being so insightful. :)

For myself, I think I'm still in Chapter IV. I'm looking forward to Chapter V. I think I may be close to turning that page, but you never know. Stories! Writers! You never know what they're gonna do!

Well, mine is the same way, but it's more of a pop up Autobiographical than anything.

Thanks Siz, and thanks momma Siz.

Momma Siz is the greatest!
