He's Gonna Come 'Round Soon

The other day I was sitting in the waiting room of my gynocologist's office. There are a lot of midwives at this office, hence the abundance of swelled bellies and anxious soon-to-be-dads milling about. One couple in particular drew my attention as I sat, waiting to be called, reading my book. They were in their late 20's or early 30's- a cute, preppy, well-matched couple. She sat to his left filling out countless pieces of paper for insurance purposes while he sat with his arm around her, his hand gently caressing her neck. His smile upon looking at her spoke volumes. It was their laughter that caught me. The way they were with one another- so close, so happy, so seemingly filled with abundant joy- their smiles lit up the room.

And I sat there thinking, hoping, longing for such a scene to some day play out in my life. Me, with the swelled belly and the attentively sweet man next to me. I glimpsed their tenderness and it put a mark on my heart. Sigh.

There is a line in Letter to Elise by The Cure that says something about making "eyes catch fire the way they should". Like a broken record, the song repeats that phrase in my head. The staccato rhythm of it plays on like a heartbeat. I am listening to the pulse of its meaning.

Me too. I would love to have a swelled belly from a handsome husband that was filled with a baby and not an excessive amount of Ding Dongs and cupcakes...

We must continue to believe that this picture you've painted is in our destiny...
