Tori Amos Would Be Proud (Maybe?)

When I was, oh, 17 years old I dyed my hair for the first time. That isn't to discount the summers I spent squeezing Sun In and lemon on my locks but before that fateful day, I'd never bought the box, mixed the dye and revealed a whole new me within an hour. I blame the Tomato for my hair coloring obsession. Why? Because I can.

The Tomato, for those of you who aren't in the know, was my high school boyfriend. He was my partner in crime in the Hair Make Over of 1991. We went with a burgundy red because, well, I was a very Depeche Mode listening- Doc Marten wearing- thrift store shopping- hipster at the time. I went from mousy brown to sassy red and it looked . . . awesome! When my mom arrived home after work she was less than pleased. And by less than pleased I mean furious. And by furious I mean she didn't speak to me for the better part of a week- and she worked at my school! Yeah, that was kind of uncomfortable. But damn if it didn't look hott. With two t's.

Fast forward 16 years later (good god when did all that time pass?!) and here I am still a slave to the vanity of hair dying. I used to fork over $150 every other month to get my hair colored and cut. Most guys when they hear that are shocked. Hey mister, looking this good takes cold hard cash and pain. (Waxing, hello!, isn't pleasant.) Ever since I moved to Seattle I've been trying to stay within a budget. I tried getting my hair cut by a couple of unknown stylists and it wasn't horrible but . . . it wasn't fantastic either. I miss my Santa Cruz stylist. So after chopping off all my hair and reverting to box hair dye, I think I've lost my hair appeal. I'm going to have to save up and throw down some money on a decent 'do with color to boot. My loved ones don't really need Christmas gifts do they?

All this is to say, I inadvertently dyed my hair red last week.

It doesn't look bad but it doesn't look great either. Actually, it's two colors of red which my co-workers claimed was hip & cool but, come on, please! I didn't intentionally dye it two tone. One co-worker actually said, "I like it. It's like how those Italian ladies wear their hair." Not hot, hip Italian ladies with beautiful shoes. No. Old Italian ladies who make pasta from scratch and wear aprons and sweep their stoops with an old broom. Those! Aaack!

It's a good thing I am not dating right now. (For oh so many reasons.)

"You've got me moving in a circle
I dyed my hair red today
I just want a little passion
to hold me in the dark
I know I've got some magic
buried deep in my heart yeah"

-Tori Amos

It is so funny for me to read this right now. As tired as I was of paying for those highlights, I sure did like my hair then. I still like it now, it's long and healthy and much easier but sheesh, it's just not exciting enough for me. I'm thinking I need a change, the '07 hair change, we'll call it!

I totally went back to the box the past 6 months or so - I couldn't afford the $150! Funny thing is, last time I got my hair cut, another stylist walked by and complimented my hairstylist on my color :)

No you can't.

Revisionist History: She didn't speak or LOOK at you for TWO weeks!!! I was terrified I was never going to be allowed to eat Turkey or drink orange juice again!

This post made me laugh out loud:) I tried doing the box thing at first and I kept screwing it up, esp. when I wanted to just do the roots. I also did a pink 'do in my teens and my "punishment" was that my mom was too embarassed to let me go to church. Yeah, that was the motivation to keep doing it! I also had a cheaper stylist in Hawaii and have had to ante up here, which has been a bit painful.

My friend went to the Aveda school in Capitol Hill and liked what they did and it was cheaper. And, there's another Aveda place in Pioneer Square (Salon 405 or something) and I don't think they take tips so that helps to keep it down.

You're kind of sassy.

I love the red! And have been thinking that my broke ass should revert to the self-dying box days... but I just don't trust myself... and now with this gray that seems to be sprouting up everywhere... omg... I don't know if I can deal.

My mom's philosophy was that hair grows back. So I was allowed to dye my hair (which I also did red) and also allowed to have my friend cut my hair in the fourth grade... although she wouldn't take me to get it fixed for a couple of weeks.

I used to dye my hair all the time, but quit for some reason (I don't remember, exactly) and now I get complements on my hair color all the time, so I leave it that way. I do miss the salon time though.

It's tough finding a new stylist. I almost cried when I thought mine had quit (and did cry when my waxer quit). Good luck in your quest!

Well from what I can tell from the pictures, I think it looks cute :)

You are so funny....your hair looks great, but a girl deserves some pampering, and hair is one investment that's worth it. Maybe santa will send some help. hmmmmm

The first time I dyed my hair it was light brown and I wanted to go blonde.

I didn't realize that my hair was full of red and the changing it to blonde made it orange. Yup. I looked like Carrot Top's sister (but way cuter).

Haven't died it since. Have a little gray, but just in the front, in once centralized area.

I haven't decided if I will ever dye my hair again. Hubby was white by the time he was 30, so I'll look good next to him for a long while to come.

looking sassy and NOT two-toned!

i'm a major fan of red hair, hence mine has been every shade since 1990.

on a friday evening, a friend and i would drink a couple of bottles of wine, dye each other's hair and go out on the town. this was a major ritual every 4 weeks.

now, i walk around with white roots forever just to be pampered by someone else.

I'm one very lucky chica in that my hair dresser has been cutting my hair since I was born! We get a 'family discount" which is something like 80% off and absolutely saves my budget! My cousin went to beauty school and she used to give cuts for free... it might be worth it to try one of those things out before spending the big bucks, because if you hate it the expensive place can always fix it, but if you adore it, you're golden!

$150 for a hair job? You were getting so ripped off! My best pal is a hair diva... she said they jack those prices up on purpose to ah, make a living.... she only charges me $30 and I have long ass hair. Wow. But speaking of hair dying... I do need to make an appt. Good luck with the color.

And you're in a hip and cool city so why not have hip and cool hair?

Krista at Habitude in Fremont. You can not go wrong - though it won't help with your budget!

Not to try and jump in the middle of an ongoing conversation here, but I am going w/the majority: it looks great in the pics.

Having grown up a redhead (albeit darker red) I spent most of my youth coming up with everything but blonde hair colorings. (Blonde hair + freckles = eeesh!!)

I came at you via TequilaCon. Not to remind that you have over 3 months to make a Grand Impression ... heh. :o}
