Soap Opera Digest

So my Mom went to the eye doctor the other day and apparently she has not one but two lazy eyes. The doctor suggested a sixteen week physical therapy session that involved wearing an eye patch to strength the eyes. So we're emailing about this and I am telling her to be extra cautious while driving (she's already a lead foot on the brakes- oh you know you are Mom!). Here's a snippet of our email where it went tragically downhill. . .

Me: Be careful Patchy. ;) Hey is Patch still on Days?

Mom: You are funny - actually he just came back to days after years of being on another show - Kayla came back too - she had been living in LA as a nurse with their daughter Stephanie who he had never met before he died- but actually he had amnesia and was living in Cincinnati all these years and Jack who was dying recognized him at a hospital and brought him back to Salem were you guessed it Jack came back from the dead too! Right when Jennifer was getting married to Frankie - oh no!

Um, seriously? Those characters have been on since I was like 2 years old (and I am 33)! Soap operas are ridiculous. I can't believe my Mom still watches that show. She's been a loyal viewer since before I was born.
How can these actors stay on a show for so many years? They obviously get paid enough for the plastic surgery. Have you seen their faces?! They never age. Isn't this woman (to the right here) now 82? I mean she's been on the show since I was a wee tot. Or these folks. . . by now they should be at least 94. It's mind boggling, I tell ya.

I remember one summer when I was about eight and my neighbor friend and I would watch Days every day. I think we'd both planned on having children, a boy and a girl, and naming them Hope and Bo.

I was a General Hospital kid growing up. Luke, Laura, and Robert Scorpio trying to save the world from the Ice Princess. I hear that Luke and Laura are now back on GH. You know, after Laura spent a lot of time in a mental hospital after killing someone.

Yeah, I saw him flipping thru channels the other day.

He was on General Hospital for awhile as Stefan Cassadine... uh... I heard.

You can always see how old a woman is by her wrinkly neck. As much plastic surgery does for their faces, no doctor can ever rid of the aging neck. Deidre looks the same as when I watched it in high school but now focus on her neck and her hands. Proof is in the pudding.

Frankie. I used to have such a crush on him, with his leather jacket and spiked hair. *swooooon*

Lord have mercy. I remember playing sick on the day that Bo and Hope first got married... I was in Jr. High. And there was all this drama over the di Mera family. And I thought Uncle Micky was dead. And HOLY SHIT Alice has got to be ancient by now.

And on GH - why is Stephan Casadine no longer in the cast? Is Nicholas still on it?

I used to watch General Hospital, and still to this day (about 8 years after I stopped watching it) I can pick up on what's going on fairly quickly. It is odd, isn't it?

Yeah, soap stars have far better plastic surgeons than the movie stars, dont' you think? I think Deirdre Hall is about 60, and I think the actress that plays Kate is in her early 50s. To me, the worst-aging one is Hope and she's only early 40s (maybe b/c she's just too bony). I have to admit that I got re-hooked on this show when I was unemployed and now I tape it every day. Carrie and Austin are also back, but apparently the actors were just let go as part of the new head writer's changes.

I love how you are pretending you don't know who Deidre Hall is by calling her "that woman"! I only know as much as I do about that show because of you and your mom! You were just as guilty of running home and watching it. You would be watching Days while I would be stuffing my face with turkey sandwiches and orange juice. Rememeber how much you hated Sami??? She's still on the show y'know. Somehow she is one of the stars!

Every single time I see Susan Lucci on AMC I try to spot the surgery scars... there must have been an awful lot!

I can see it now: the continuation of soaps will be the deciding argument for making cloning legal.

OMG..I don't believe they do age. And the last time I watched one was many many moons ago..but as some have already mentioned. I can watch one episode and it is like time has never passed. They have the time machine...I KNOW it!!

All I can think of is how Gonzo (cat) as eye problems too. (Thankfully, she doesn't drive.) The vet made no mention of eye patch therapy though.

I can't begin to image trying to get Gonzo wearing an eye patch.

It's not plastic surgery, they've all sworn an oath to the dark lord for "fame" and "beauty", duh!

(BTW the dark lord is also known as STEPHANO!)
Um, whoever that is...
