The First Full Week

I thought that working full time after 5 weeks off would make me feel tired but I never thought I would feel this tired. Bone tired. Bags under my eyes. Falling asleep before 11. No interest in TV. Desperately wanting to nap around 3:00 every day.

The new job is good. I can't muster the energy to sound more thrilled than that but I DO like it. The people are super nice, friendly and helpful. People laugh and tell stories and check in with each other about going to the breakroom to lunch. The work itself isn't daunting as much as it is an undertaking. I am in the midst of a "needs assessment" which is just a fancy way of saying I am trying to figure out what every program expects and wants from the Volunteer Program. I have one more meeting with the final program on Monday but from what I have surmised, I pretty much need to overhaul the entire volunteer process. That's fine by me. I like a challenge. And I am certainly not bored.

People seem impressed with me. I forget that they don't all know my resume so when I chime in with ideas or offer to take tasks off their plate that shouldn't be there, they look at me with big smiles. And apparently I come off as very chipper and outgoing- at least that is what one person described me as yesterday.

I really can't wait to have my own cubicle office though. I am so paranoid about checking my personal email account but I am an admitted addict. The guilt and worry overtake me and I try to be super stealth when I pop onto gmail. My computer screen faces out and people walk by constantly to offices or to grab their stuff out of the printer. It's really the only part of the job that I don't like so far.

Even though I have been superduper tired, I can't not go over and see my family. Finn keeps getting bigger and cuter. I managed to get over there twice this week to make Double B and Dokey dinner and get in my Finn loving time. He's making a lot of faces and noises now. I like to give him eskimo kisses. He seems to take to my ample bosom because every time I hold him, he falls asleep. I managed to go out with my friend P to see Raider's of the Lost Ark at the park this week too. They blow up this big screen and project the movie right out there in an open field. Everyone piles in with their blankets and snacks, kids and dogs. We were grateful when the swarm of teens decided to move off to the edge of the crowd to continue their texting and making out.

It's been awhile since I could say this and truly mean it but: TGIF. Sizzle needs a nap.

I so agree with the "TGIF" senitment. I cannot wait for this day to be over! That said, I have to comment on the teens making out thing - we went to a baseball game last week and the couple in front of us made out the entire time. It was so annoying, and I about cheered when they left at the beginning of the 8th inning. That meant I could watch the game without being distracted for just a little while. When they left the crowd around us all started laughing and making comments. It was truly horrible. Sorry you had to live through what sounds like a similar experience.

I am so happy for you. If life is so busy and so good that you are falling into bed at the end of the day it's a good sign. You've made great decisions, Ms. Sizz. Keep up the good work.

I keep finding out about the junky movies showing outside, like Xanadu. Where was that one?

Glad to hear you're still liking your job, and it probably is refreshing for someone to come in and actually want to help and contribute. I think it took me a good month to get used to the schedule.

Sounds to me like you're settling in well. I'm sure this new normal will start to feel more and more, well, normal in the next week or so. Through the exhaustion, you sound content. Congratulations on that.

You've earned that TGIF and the nap.

Just a itty, bitty suggestion...

maybe you should find out if management monitors activities on your computer...

some programs can do an out and out monitor of your every movement, some just track actual keystrokes, etc

It's probably a good idea to know for sure what their policy is regarding checking personal email on a company computer.

I've had to fire a few people because they were using government computers for personal stuff -- one guy, a PhD no less, was using his to run a side business ... I kid you not.

They may have a policy that allows you to use their computer on your lunch break, because it's your time, they don't pay you for your lunch.

But, then again, if you ask, you have already tipped them off that you either have or are about to do it!

Hmmmm, second alternative? Get email access on your cell phone.

Congrats on being tired!

Well, your first full week under your belt. Congrats. And I agree with some of the other comments here. Exercise caution checking e-mail on company computers. Lots of places are using software to monitor use of company PCs. Personally, I think it's none of their business that I'm calling you hawt in e-mail, but for some reason they may not care about what I think.
