Book Club for Bloggers

In 10 days, this will be me.

I'm looking for some good reading to take along with me on my trip. You know, to pass the hours as I lounge on the white sand or languish in the hammock, sipping a margarita and adding more freckles to my collection.

Here is where you come in. What books should I read? What are your favorites?

A Million Little Pieces by James Frey and the sequel My Friend Leonard. Both are excellent.

Also, for a little girl power, The Cigarette Girl. My friend and I have each read this book 3 or 4 times, it's just that good.

Oooo...are you coming to visit me?? :)

Check out Sophie Kinsella. I think she writes about me in her Shopaholic series...She's one of my favorite writers! :)
The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus is a great book too.

Happy reading!

How did I miss this? You're going on vacation? REALLY? To a beach? To just veg? Oh, lucky, lucky you... I can't think of anyone who deserves the break more.

Books? Aw, shit... too many to mention.

If you haven't read them yet, here are two of my favorites:

1) A Heart Breaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers

2) Gilda Radner's Autobiography.

They are both awesome!

Oh, there are just so many that I love. If you want a (kind-of) trashy read I suggest Bergdorf Blondes by Plum Sykes, or Social Crimes by June Stanton Hitchcock. If you want something more serious, how about The Secret Life of Bees (I can't remember the author). I love all of those books and couldn't put any of them down.

Oh, and I totally second Gilda Radner's Autobiography. It's awesome!

Sizzle, you know I don't read... apart from an occasional Magazine here and there.

I'd start with something happy :)

There are just too many to narrow it down. And, I'm very strange as I love to read the classics..(yeah I know, what a nerd)!

have a wonderful vacation and tell us ALL about it

Some suggestions from the resident book dork:

The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion (prepare to cry)

Teacher Man by Frank McCourt (never read any of his other books but this one is great)

For the Relief of Unbearable Urges by Nathan Englander (brilliant collection of short stories...just, brilliant)

Anything by Lorrie Moore. She writes life exactly how it is.

America by Jon Stewart (a bit heavy to take on vacation but damn it's hilarious)

This is easy: "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger. Read it before it's a movie (it will be - it's already listed on imdb.com). More than anything else, it is a love story. As the back cover says, "The Time Traveler's Wife is a story of fate, hope and belief, and more than that, the power of love to endure beyond the bounds of time."

Sexy too. And extremely skillful, beautiful writing. I didn't think I'd like. Turns out, I loved it. The only bad thing about it is that it ends.

It is the perfect trip book.

I knew you'd all give GREAT suggestions. I will let you know what I end up reading. Now, I just don't know HOW I will decide given all the great options.

Thanks!

Anything by Chuck Palahniuk is good, since he is a very twisted individual. Most of his books are disturbing, though. I'd recommend Invisible Monsters for vacation.

I third the recommendation on The Time Traveler's Wife and would throw in there another love story, The Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst.

Plus, I can't go without recommending my all time favorite, The Magus by John Fowles. It's about 700 pages and I read it in less than 48 hours because I didn't want to put it down.

I don't know what your tastes are but here are some of my recent favorites:

Birds Without Wings by Louis DeBernieres - absolutely beautiful. He's a little verbose but it's worth it. I promise.

It's years old and you've probably read it but Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris is hilarious.

Another one that's really funny (but also a few years old so you may have read it) is How to Lose Friends and Alienate People (I think the author is Toby Young).

If I think of more I'll let you know. It's been so long since I've done any pleasure reading though that I'm having a hard time coming up with them.

Have a great vacation!

I second Vonnegut. Anything Vonnegut.
Just finished "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs" by Chuck Klosterman. Quick, fun, pop-cultured read.
"Bel Canto" by Ann Pachett is very good. Anything Tom Robbins is good, in particular "Another Roadside Attraction" and "Half-Asleep in Frog Pajamas."
"The Namesake" is great, "The Alchemist" is one I read right before I went on a trip, goodness I could go on forever!

I don't remember the author, but definitely read "Kite Running", which is by far the best book I have read in years, and I read on the average of three books a week. Now you have my opinion, which is worth probably all of a nickel. Love your site!!!!

Gotta mark another tally next to The Time Traveler's Wife. Great story.

Also just finished The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. This is pretty good. Nice viewpoints presented.

Have fun - Ben O.
